Having by-passed a potential Charybdis in the earlier straits, I now entered a good candidate for Scylla’s lair, with vertical cliffs crowding close together. The current quickened perceptively in the tight confines, and for the first time I had to work the boat upstream taking care to avoid the main flow. Despite passing close under the cliffs, no monster stirred, just some jackdaws…
